Belhus Cricket Club
North Stifford Village Green
Belhus Cricket Club was established in 1960 as a result of the merger between Belhus Park CC and Belhus Association CC. The former played its home matches, as the name suggests, at Belhus Park (which it shared with Aveley CC, a club and whose roots dated back to the eighteenth century) that had been landscaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and was home to the Belhus mansion, one of the great Country homes of the era. The name 'Belhus' derived its name from the owner of the house in the 14th century, Nicholas de Belhus, who was believed to be of Norman ancestry. Queen Elizabeth I visited the Mansion in 1588 and her carriage probably crossed over what was to become the cricket square.
